Don’t touch that dial! CBS News/National Press Club radio centennial series now available online

A 10-part audio series commemorating the centennial of radio, co-produced by CBS News and the National Press Club, now is available online after a two-week run on the CBS World News Roundup, the network program that launched the era of broadcast journalism in 1938.

Legendary CBS News broadcaster Edward R. Murrow

The series, “Celebrating a Century of Sound,” is anchored by CBS News correspondent Sam Litzinger. It includes 10 one-minute chapters and a mini-documentary covering the history of the medium, from crystal sets to digital platforms, and from soap operas and symphonies to rock 'n' roll and all-news radio.

The entire series is now available online.

The series was conceived by Club President Mike Freedman, former general manager of CBS Radio Network News, in partnership with current CBS News Vice President and General Manager Craig Swagler.

“As the birthplace of broadcast news and the 21st century leader in audio services, we’re pleased and proud to partner with the National Press Club to bring this unique series to listeners across the country and around the world,” Swagler said.

Added Freedman, executive producer of the series: “Radio is the most intimate of all media and part of the fabric of America. It represents the sound of our lives. The National Press Club and CBS News are a perfect pairing on this project, given our storied histories, current strengths and unqualified commitments to press freedom.”

The Club plans a companion onsite radio history exhibit later this year.
