D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser plans to speak on future of city at Headliners event, Feb. 21

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser plans speak at a National Press Club Headliners Coffee and Conversation on Friday, Feb, 21, at 11 a.m. Bowser plans to deliver an update on the future of the city.

President  Donald Trump on the campaign trail spoke about Washington in unflattering terms and threatened a federal takeover of the city. Washington, as a federal district, has limited home rule and Congress can intervene in its affairs. Bowser has since said a meeting with Trump at his estate in Florida left her feeling "optimistic" that they could find common ground.

Bowser is serving her third term as mayor of Washington, DC, and was first elected to the DC Council in 2007. She is the first African American woman to be elected to three, four-year terms as mayor of an American city.

Her administration has focused on DC's economic competitiveness and diversification, affordable housing production, public school enrollment and improving resident satisfaction in city services.

The event begins at 11 a.m. and is open to members of the National Press Club members, their guests, and credentialed media. Registration is essential to obtain access to the Club. For all registration-related questions, please email [email protected]. All guest information must be confirmed 72 hours before the start of the event.

To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put DC in the subject line and email it to [email protected]. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 9 a.m. on the day of the event.
