Club's American Legion Post 20 meeting Sept. 3 hosts former DOD public affairs leader
The American Legion Post 20 affiliated with the National Press Club resumes its monthly meetings after a summer break on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at noon in the McClendon Room of the Club's Reliable Source restaurant. The guest speaker will be Brig. Gen. Robert Hastings (ret.), former Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs and author of "PEOPLE FIRST, MISSION ALWAYS: Lessons from 40 Years in the Leadership Laboratory of Military Service."
The meeting will be in person and also on Zoom for those who can't make it to the Club that day. It starts with lunch before the speaker begins. All Club members are welcome.
Hastings is a decorated helicopter pilot, and he commanded U.S. Army and Texas state military units from platoon to brigade level. He's the principal of Robert Hastings & Associates, a leadership and communications consultancy focused on aerospace and defense. He has held leadership positions with Bell Textron, BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Hastings is a member of the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame, the Defense Information School Hall of Fame, and the winner of the Lt. Col. James "Maggie" Megellas Award for distinguished public service.
There's been a policy change regarding the way Post 20 meeting attendees pay for lunch. The Reliable Source will let us return to the traditional practice of individual lunch bills, rather than paying for everything in one bill. However, to make things easier on the staff, the Reliable Source requests that everyone use the buffet rather than order a la carte from the menu. Guests are welcome to attend with members.
Post 20 has been affiliated with the Press Club for more than a century. It was founded at the suggestion of famed World War I General John J. Pershing, an associate member of the Press Club at the time.
