The story of how Edward R. Murrow and his team of correspondents invented broadcast news at CBS Radio during World War II is the stuff of legends. Lesser known is the fact that there was a "Girl" among the "Murrow Boys."

As we continue our 2020 National Press Club/CBS News partnership audio series commemorating the centennial of radio, correspondent Sam Litzinger remembers Mary Marvin Breckinridge Patterson. She was the lone woman among the Murrow Boys of World War II. Born on Oct. 2, she would have been 115 years old this year. As it happens, she lived to 97, much of that time in Washington.

Earlier this year, the Club and CBS Radio joined forces on the 10-part series "Celebrating a Century of Sound," which aired nationally on the CBS World News Roundup. Those 10 chapters formed the basis of a mini-documentary now available on the Club website.

"It has been an honor and a pleasure to partner with CBS News Radio throughout 2020 in commemorating the 100th anniversary of radio," said Club President Michael Freedman, himself the former general manager of CBS Radio Network. "Radio is part of the fabric of America and remains a powerful source of news, information and entertainment. The most intimate of all media, it truly represents the sound of our lives."
