Club sponsors national Night In For Austin Tice, April 29

The National Press Club is encouraging everyone who supports press freedom to order take out on Wednesday, April 29, from restaurants that intend to participate in Night Out for Austin Tice later in the year.

Night Out was slated for April 29 but had to be rescheduled to July 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic. As part of Night Out, restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds for the evening to augment the FBI reward fund for information leading to the safe return of Tice, an award-winning journalist who has been detained in Syria since 2012.

The Club is sponsoring Night In For Austin Tice on April 29 to give a boost to Night Out restaurants by promoting take out from the establishments while they are struggling through the pandemic.

“We asked our restaurant partners to step up and help us with a program to raise awareness about the case of Austin Tice. They were there for us last year and will be again later this year," said Bill McCarren, the Club's executive director. "But now restaurants are in trouble so we want to help them. We are asking everybody -- but especially our 3,100 members -- to order take-out from these restaurants on the evening of Wednesday, April 29, and bring it home for a Night In For Austin Tice."

The Club is urging everyone who orders from the Night In restaurants on April 29 to promote their dinners on social media.

“Digital photos and short videos will be a big part of the success of Night In For Austin Tice," said Austin’s sister Naomi Tice, co-chair of Night Out For Austin. "We want everybody to see the wonderful food and to plan to actually visit these restaurants and be together with people in July. With any luck our brother will be home by July 14 and can join some of us at these wonderful places.”

Tice was working for McClatchy and The Washington Post when he went missing. He is a Georgetown University graduate, a native Houstonian, and a United States Marine who served three tours of duty. He is the only U.S. journalist being held overseas, and after more than seven years, has endured the longest detention of any U.S. journalist to date.

The inaugural Night Out for Austin Tice held on May 2, 2019, drew support from 80 restaurants in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

The National Press Club temporarily suspended in-person services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Club continues to offer programing on its website and remains dedicated to press freedom issues including our ongoing efforts to #FreeAustinTice.
