Club member announces trailer for his book, 'Whistle-Stop Politics'

National Press Club member Edward Segal has launched the trailer for his forthcoming book, "Whistle-Stop Politics: Campaign Trains and the Reporters Who Covered Them."

trainWhistle-Stop Politics features stories and anecdotes from journalists about their experience covering whistle-stopping politicians They include Mary McGrory of the Washington Post, Merriman Smith of United Press International, Richard L. Strout of the Christian Science Monitor, and Jack Bell of Associated Press.

Segal’s book includes a foreword by and recollections from Jules Witcover, who is a veteran Washington correspondent, award-winning journalist, former political columnist for the Baltimore Sun, and author of "85 Days: The Last Campaign of Robert Kennedy."

“The trains were the backdrop of political drama, intrigue, humor, and triumph for more than 185 years,” Segal said. “Campaign trains were an American invention that enabled politicians to connect with as many voters as possible in the country’s largest cities and smallest towns.”

Whistle-Stop Politics is based on Segal’s years of researching and collecting stories, anecdotes, images of hundreds of whistle-stopping politicians; his interviews with journalists who accompanied them; and his experience organizing a train tour for a member of Congress.
