Books & Brunch plans to discuss 'The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother)' on Feb. 21

The National Press Club Books & Brunch group plans to meet virtually at noon Saturday, Feb. 21, to discuss The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) by Rabih Alameddine. The novel won the 2025 National Book Award for Fiction.

All members and their guests are welcome to participate. To receive a Zoom link, please email Fay Iudicello [email protected] by Thursday, Feb. 18. Those who RSVP should expect to receive the invitation at 9 a.m. on Feb. 21.

Set in Lebanon, the novel tells the story of high-school philosophy teacher Raja, a 63-year-old gay man who lives in an apartment with his mother, Zaifa. While Raja longs for books, solitude, and privacy, his mother demands to know every detail of his life. When Raja is awarded a writing residency in the United States, he must navigate his duty as a son against the opportunity.

Vox named the book to its "10 Best Books of 2025" list, calling Alameddine’s writing "winsome, warm-hearted, and very funny."

Planning ahead? The group is slated to read Andrew Ross Sorkin's 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History as its next non-fiction read at noon on Saturday, March 21.
