The novel is set in 2119 England, which is now partially submerged in rising seas. The protagonist, university professor Tom Metcalfe, is a historian who studies the period of 1990 to 2030, known in 2119 as the "Derangement" because people knew about climate change but failed to act. Metcalfe is searching for a lost poem read aloud at a party in 2014.
New York Times book critic Dwight Garner called it "the best thing McEwan has written in ages. It's a sophisticated entertainment of a high order."
