Browne-Marshall’s book takes readers “on a journey from the invasion of Africa into the Colonial Period and the Civil Rights Movement -- from Queen Nzinga to Shirley Chisholm,” according to the book’s page on Amazon.

The book traces the history of how society in general and the law in particular did not support the rights of black women. The women described in the book had the intelligence and the courage, not to mention perseverance, to stand up against these injustices.

Browne-Marshall has a law degree and is a professor of constitutional law at John Jay College. She is a legal correspondent covering Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court and the United Nations; a civil-rights attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center; author of several books; and a playwright
