Bill Senior, 54-year Club member, ex-Kiplinger exec, dies at 80

William "Bill" Senior, a 54-year member of the National Press Club and retired editorial manager at The Kiplinger Washington Editors, died June 7 at the age of 90 at his home in Ashburn, Va. He and his wife of 63 years, Lorraine, who died on May 9, had lived for many years in Reston, Va.

Senior's 31-year career at Kiplinger began in 1970 when he joined the organization as editor of its agriculture letter. A native of Rhode Island, he was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and had a masters degree from Rutgers University.

"Always kind and helpful, as well as damned smart and a top-notch journalist, Bill was a mentor to scores of Kiplinger employees over the years," said Kevin McCormally, Kiplinger's chief content officer and senior vice president. He called Senior "one of the true giants of the Kiplinger Washington Editors." Shortly before retiring in 2001 at the age of 75, Senior helped create Kiplinger's Retirement Report, a newsletter focusing on retirement issues.

Survivors include his children, Susan Senior of Arlington, Va., Richard Senior of Ashburn, and Janet Gianti (Samuel) of Highlands Ranch, Colo.
