Award-winning broadcast journalist William Greenwood, 77

William "Bill" Greenwood, an award-winning broadcaster and executive with Mutual Broadcasting, UPI Audio and ABC News, died Jan. 19.  He was 77 and had been a member of the National Press Club since 2006.

Greenwood, who lived in Washington, won a 2005 Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding news coverage from the Radio Television Digital News Association, and a 2002 Peabody/duPont award from the Columbia School of Journalism for live coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  His long career in broadcasting included covering numerous presidential campaigns, the Iran hostage crisis and the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

"I treasured working with him," said Club member Sheilah Kast.  "Amid many big egos and sharp elbows at ABC News, Bill stood out as kind and calm.  And funny!  In addition to navigating together the back up positions in ABC's tiny White House booth, we had fun co-anchoring the overnight show in New York."

She said she and Greenwood enjoyed being called "the bickerings" for their occasional on-air banter.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
