American Legion Post 20 meeting at noon today to feature head of Mariners' Museum

The president and CEO of the Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, Virginia, will speak on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at a noon meeting of the National Press Club's American Legion Post 20.

All Club members are invited to attend.

This will be a hybrid meeting, with a Zoom component for those who live outside the DC area or who cannot get to the Press Club. See information for Zoom access below.

Howard Hoege III will describe the museum's collection, which includes more than 200 tons of artifacts recovered from the USS Monitor

The Monitor was the first ironclad vessel commissioned by the U.S. Navy. She is best known for an epic four-hour battle with the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia. The battle ended with neither ship able to destroy the other, and it marked a major turning point in naval technology and tactics.

Hoege graduated from West Point, and he served as an infantry officer and as a JAG officer. His career includes service in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division.

Also at the meeting, a representative from the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission will discuss the upcoming dedication of the National WWI Memorial's new bronze relief series. That will take place Sept. 13 at 7:15 p.m. at the memorial located in front of the Willard InterContinental Hotel, just a block from the Club. The bronze frieze will depict five scenes in the journey of an American WWI soldier.

Post 20 has been affiliated with the National Press Club for more than a century. The post was founded at the urging of famed World War I General John J. Pershing, who was an associate Club member at the time.
