AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler to discuss AI and the future of work at a Coffee & Conversation on April 28
AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler will address the impact of artificial intelligence on the American workforce at a Headliners Coffee & Conversation on Tuesday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the National Press Club.
This event is open to members and the public. Register to attend here.

Shuler, who took the helm of the AFL-CIO in 2021 after the death of longtime leader Richard Trumka, is the first woman to lead the federation of more than 65 national and international labor unions representing nearly 15 million workers in the U.S. and abroad. In 2025, about 14.7 million workers belonged to unions, accounting for 10% of wage and salary workers and about the same as the prior year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in February.
As AI automation is expected to continue to disrupt the job market and displace workers in the coming years, Shuler will talk about how the union is growing in popularity among workers looking for job protection and security. In a press release earlier this year, Shuler called standing up to tech billionaires making money off AI the “next big fight" for the labor movement.
This Coffee & Conversation will begin with remarks from Shuler followed by a moderated question-and-answer session. To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put UNION in the subject line and email it to [email protected]. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 9 a.m. April 28.
