Secretary Glickman talked about U.S. agriculture policy, focusing on the safety of genetically altered foods and trade with Europe. He said that the Clinton administration would conduct long-term studies on the safety of altered foods and could ask the food industry to voluntarily label such foods. He also said that the U.S. would use all its legal remedies to compel Europe to accept American farm products even if it meant imposing tariffs. After his remarks he answered questions from the audience.
