Club Reopening Information for Members
After many weeks of stay at home orders to combat COVID-19, the government has lifted restrictions to the point the National Press Club can safely re-open and welcome our members, clients and staff back to the club.
The safety and security of our members, clients and staff is our top priority. As such, we will continue to follow CDC guidance, and take every precaution to keep our club safe and open for business.
Following is a summary of the many actions we are taking to ensure a safe environment to host your events. These actions will be continuously updated to adhere to the most current government regulations and guidance. It’s important you read through these guidelines before visiting our facility.
Before You Visit
Modified Hours of Operation
The National Press Club will have modified hours of operation. The club will be open to members with confirmed reservations Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The last arrival time available for reservation is 7 p.m.
Members are required to make a reservation to visit the club. Reservations can be made via our online form. Reservations are for members and their guests only. Member reservations cannot exceed 4-hours in length, and no members will be permitted to enter the facility after 7 p.m. Members with a 7 p.m. reservation may stay until close.
Travellers from High-Risk States
Anyone coming into Washington, D.C. from a high-risk state (within the prior 14 days) travelling for non-essential activities will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days from their arrival in the District.
NPC Members and guests who have visited a high-risk state and who have not quarantined for 14 days will not be admitted into the National Press Club. High-risk states that require 14 days of quarantine (as of Sep. 8):
When You Arrive
Arriving at the Club
Members with reservations should call the National Press Club at 202-662-7500 when they arrive at the National Press Building to be escorted to the 13th floor.
Elevators will be limited to no more than two (2) occupants in each car. It may take a few minutes to arrive at the 13th floor.
All members will be appropriately screened for COVID-19 symptoms. When you arrive at the facility you should expect to have your temperature checked. This check will happen BEFORE you are admitted into the Club. No one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 will be permitted to enter.
Proof of Membership
Members must show their current membership card in order to enter the club. If a member does not have their membership card with them, they can provide their member number. The front desk will need to verify that their membership is active and up to date before entering the facility.
During Your Visit
Members will practice social distancing by remaining at least six (6) feet away from other guests and NPC staff whenever possible.
Face Coverings & Masks
Members will wear facemasks whenever possible inside the Club for their own protection and the protection of other guests and staff. The Club has a limited supply of facemasks for guests who do not have their own.
Sanitizing & Hand Washing
Members will practice proper hygiene and sanitization including hand washing and the use of touchless hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the Club in accordance with CDC recommendations.
Members are allowed to bring up to two guests.
The gym is closed through Phase II. The showers and sauna are also not available. The locker room will continue to function as a restroom only. This is until further notice. Do not attempt to go into the gym or use the showers or sauna.
The Institute staff is working from home until further notice. The Library will be closed until further notice. Members may not use the shared computers and terminals at this time because of safety concerns. Members should not share newspapers or books.
The Fourth Estate Restaurant
The Fourth Estate will be closed for lunch and dinner service during Phase II. The Fourth Estate will also be closed on Saturday night until further notice. Members are encouraged to make a reservation to the club and eat at the Reliable Source restaurant or order from our takeout menu.
The Reliable Source
The Reliable Source will be open to members with reservations to visit the club. A limited menu will be available and members will be able to eat in the main dining room, Truman Lounge and McClendon room. Members are also encouraged to order from our takeout menu if they would like food to-go.
Food & Beverage
Eating and drinking is now permitted inside the club. The Reliable Source restaurant will have seating at 50 percent capacity. Make a reservation to the club and indicate which meal you plan to enjoy while at the club. Food is also available for takeout from our online store.
The Work Area (AKA "Freelancer’s Alley")
The work carrels on the 14th floor will be open for use with access to power, Ethernet and Wi-Fi as usual. Members should work in every other carrel for now to accomplish social distancing.
Member Organized Events
Any member interested in hosting an in-person event must have that gathering approved by the club. Members should email Director of Membership Kate Helster at [email protected] with any questions.
Members wishing to meet with Membership staff should come to the front desk. Members are still encouraged to email [email protected] with your request so that we can best help you.
Members and guests should not attempt to come behind the front desk, nor should they touch the glass. The Front Desk should always be staffed when the Club is open. However, because staff need breaks for hand washing you may find a note asking you to wait until the front desk staff has returned. If you cannot gain entrance to the Club and are in the outer entrance you may speak to the Front Desk via an intercom device installed by the fire alarmed door to the stairwell. While the front desk staff will remain seated it is essential that the space before them remain clear so they can operate the gates with good line of sight. No one should linger at the front desk or chat with the staff there.
What To Expect From Our Facility
We have implemented additional cleaning processes throughout the day, including enhanced janitorial cleaning of our lavatories, doorknobs, handrails, elevator buttons and other frequently touched surfaces multiple times each day with a multi-surface disinfectant cleaner from the EPA’s List N Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2. We are also conducting sterilization cleanings of the entire facility on a regular basis.
You will find multiple touchless hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the Club including in the reception lobby, main lobby, hallways and common areas.
All shared equipment such as podiums, microphones and other A/V resources are sanitized before and after each event use.
Instructive signage is displayed throughout the Club reminding members and staff how to dispose of masks and gloves and the importance of proper handwashing and social distancing.
Members will be reminded of the need to maintain six (6) feet of social distancing at all times. Room setups and configurations will be adjusted to ensure a six (6) foot separation between individual seating, tables and groups of people.
Elevator access to the Press Club will be the same as before, however there will be a limit of two (2) people per car to ensure social distancing, so it may take a few extra minutes to get to the Club using the six street level elevators.
