Help The Heroes

A New Partnership between Howard University Hospital and The National Press Club to provide food access for front line medical workers.

Looking for a way to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic? Join the National Press Club’s Help The Heroes program today and let front-line healthcare workers know you’ve got their back!

Front-line health workers – including nurses, midwives, community health workers, doctors, pharmacists and others – provide care directly to their communities. But while they put their lives on the line to help fight a battle in the hospital they also face challenges at home: meals are skipped for the sake of time, and schedules have adversely impacted their ability to function at peak.

Help The Heroes is designed to ensure that hospital workers can obtain freshly made to-go meals as they leave work, guaranteeing they have food in a timely, convenient and safe way. The program recognizes that communities of color are often the most-impacted by COVID-19, so by helping workers at Howard University Hospital, we are bringing aid where it is needed most.

Contributions to the Help The Heroes Fund will enable us to serve so many! But we need your help. Your personal gift of $50 ensures a hard-working nurse one fresh meal each day for a week. Your company’s donation of $5,000 provides 500 meals to Howard University Hospital workers. Our goal is to deliver 300 meals per day until a vaccine is available and/or hospital capacities return to pre-pandemic levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Press Club culinary team prepares meals and delivers them to Howard University Hospital in real time. Those meals are provided in takeaway form to front line medical workers at shift changes.

Health Care workers are pulling longer and very demanding shifts during Covid-19. They finish the shift exhausted and in urgent need of a shower. And they must commute home and make dinner. Often dinner is skipped which leads to serious problems. These nurses are risking their lives to save their patients but also the community. We can and must help them with some of their own personal challenges.

Corporations and individuals make donations to the National Press Club Journalism Institute, the Club’s affiliated 501(c)(3) by indicating the contribution is for Help The Heroes. These funds are used to pay for the cost of food, labor, packaging and delivery needed to produce meals daily.

For about $300,000 we should be able to run this program until there is a vaccine or hospital capacities return to normal rates.

Sure, that will help produce 50 meals for hospital workers and would be a great contribution. We accept contributions from individuals as well. Our minimum contribution of $10 will feed a person in need.

Yes. While you should always consult your tax professional on these matters, 100 percent of your contribution will be used in this significant effort.
