January 14, 2014 9:30 AM

Location: Bloomberg Room

Have you ever been frustrated by an internet search that turns up no hits? Or by one that returns too many? Have you felt in your bones that the info you need is out there in the wild west of the internet, but you just can’t find it? Studies show that searchers are unsuccessful 50% of the time. Up your average by learning tricks of the trade from a news librarian with who has worked as a researcher at the Newseum, NPR and The National Press Club.

Topics to be covered include:

• Google and Beyond- how to use the world’s most popular search engine efficiently and the other search options available.
• Surface web vs. Deep web- The majority of the web content is not searchable by standard search engines- learn how to access this hidden vein of information.
• Think Like a Librarian- Research librarians develop an intuitive sense of where to go for certain types of searches. We’ll discuss typical jumping off points for various types of requests.
• Google Drive- Google Drive began as a way to store your files in the cloud so that they could be accessed from anywhere. It has expanded to include all of what used to be Google Docs and other office tools. Learn all you need to know about using Google Drive in the last portion of this class.
