The NPC Events Team and NPC American Legion Post 20 are sponsoring a tour of the historic Washington Navy Yard on Friday, June 1, at 11 a.m. NPC members and guests should meet just outside the Navy Yard’s Sixth Street gate on M Street SE. Attendees will accompany escorts through security. Commercial parking is nearby; the nearest Metro stop is Navy Yard/Ballpark Station (New Jersey Avenue exit).

The walking tour will take about 90 minutes and will conclude with a visit to the National Museum of the U.S. Navy. The tour will be hosted by the Naval Historical Foundation.

Established in 1799, the Washington Navy Yard is the oldest shore establishment in the U.S. Navy. It occupies land set aside by George Washington for use by the federal government along the Anacostia River. Formerly a shipyard and later a naval gun factory, it was burned during the War of 1812 to prevent capture by the British.

Today it is home of the Chief of Naval Operations and headquarters for numerous Navy commands including Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Navy Installations Command, Naval History and Heritage Command, and the Navy Band.
