New data from the 2023 GAP Report offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with enhancing farmers' access to productivity-enhancing tools.
What: Washington D.C. and Online – October 3, 2023 – The Global Agricultural Productivity Initiative at Virginia Tech (GAP Initiative) is proud to announce the launch of the 2023 Global Agricultural Productivity (GAP) Report®. At this collaborative event with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Coalition on Sustainable Productivity Growth for Food Security and Resource Conservation (SPG Coalition) we will unpack the report findings and discuss the policy, socioeconomic, market, and innovation dimensions that impact farmers' access to and adoption of appropriate, proven tools for sustainably improving agricultural productivity.
For decades, agricultural innovation has played a pivotal role in enhancing productivity and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural systems. However, the sluggish growth in Total Factor Productivity (TFP) observed from 2011 to 2021 raises important concerns about the adoption rate of productivity-enhancing tools, especially in low-income countries. To achieve the new target TFP growth rate of 1.91 percent annually and reduce reliance on unsustainable practices for increasing agricultural output, it is crucial to address the barriers farmers face in accessing and adopting proven tools.
The launch event, to be held at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. and online, will unite key stakeholders from around the world. It will shed light on the critical role sustainable productivity growth plays in strengthening food systems, as well as advancing climate resilience in anticipation of COP28.
