Panel Discussion: “Women Report The Civil War”

The History & Heritage Committee presents this event in observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, as well as the 40th anniversary of the admission of women to the National Press Club.

A panel of distinguished scholars and journalists will cover the topic “Women Report The Civil War” from an unusual variety of perspectives: the war coverage and careers of several prominent women journalists, including Jane Swisshelm and Laura Redden (aka Howard Glyndon); the contrast in war coverage between women’s and children’s monthly publications and that of the daily and weekly press; and the unique perspectives of bereaved mothers and wives on the impact of the war on their lives, as revealed in narratives supporting their pension petitions.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Murrow Room, National Press Club (13th floor). There is no charge, but reservations are requested by email ([email protected]) or at the Club’s reservation line (202-662-7501). For additional information, please contact committee member Elizabeth Smith Brownstein at 202-362-5765 or [email protected].
