More than ever, journalists across the country are craving support and community around navigating the job hunt given the brutal spate of newsroom layoffs right now.
The National Press Club Journalism Institute supports job-seeking journalists by offering free career workshops every other week to help journalists with all parts of the job search process, from crafting compelling cover letters to utilizing their own network in trying to land new roles.
“Helping journalists in charting the next steps in their careers is at the core of what we do,” said Ed Kelley, the Institute’s president. “These workshops can benefit them in numerous ways, in providing professional as well as emotional support.”
The format of these virtual office hours will vary, focusing on instruction and discussion on topics like job applications, navigating hiring processes, networking, and the psychological toll of the search. These sessions will offer practical skills and tips for journalists looking for work, as well as a sense of community and comfort during what we know can be a deeply difficult time in one’s life.
“The job turbulence journalists are experiencing right now is disheartening, but we don’t have to go through this alone,” said Beth Francesco, executive director for the Institute. “Yes, journalism is a competitive field. But we share the challenges and can support each other through difficult times.”
Those interested in attending can sign up here.
To ensure everyone attending has the best experience possible, we’re limiting registrations for each session to 30 people, so we encourage those who are interested to sign up early. If you sign up and later cannot attend for whatever reason, please let us know in advance. Journalists are welcome to sign up for as many of these sessions as they want.
The National Press Club Journalism Institute promotes an engaged global citizenry through an independent and free press, and equips journalists with skills and standards to inform the public in ways that inspire a more representative democracy. As the non-profit affiliate of the National Press Club, the Institute powers journalism in the public interest. Support our work with a donation today.
