The COVID-19 pandemic presents educators – as well as parents and students – with some of the most critical decisions in history. Schools around the country remain closed; remote learning varies widely by school; and when and how schools will open in the fall is uncertain.

Our panel of school leaders will help us understand how schools and universities are responding to the coronavirus crisis and how they are preparing for the fall. Can they open schools in a way that protects the health and safety of students and school staff? What lessons have they learned about communicating with their many stakeholders during this unprecedented health crisis?

On Thursday, May 28, the National Press Club will host a 75-minute panel discussion with education leaders representing schools here and around the country.

Panelists include:

Alberto Carvalho
Miami Dade Schools Superintendent
Miami Dade is the country’s 4th largest school system and has been cited as a leader in innovation and distance learning.

Anne M. Kress
President, Northern Virginia Community College
NOVA is the largest public educational institution in Virginia, and the 2nd largest community college in the U.S.

Carissa Moffat Miller
Executive Director, The Council of Chief State School Officers
CCSSO is a nonpartisan organization representing the public leaders of elementary and secondary schools in every state, the District of Columbia, and other jurisdictions.

The session will be moderated by Bloomberg Government Congressional and Campaigns Reporter Emily Wilkins, who is also National Press Club Secretary.

The event is open to all journalists, members of the National Press Club, and interested members of the public.
