July 25, 2017 10:00 AM
Location: Conference Rooms
This event is open only to members of The National Press Club and credentialed press.
John Thompson’s recent resignation as Census Director sent shock waves through the statistical and political community and left the Bureau leaderless just as preparations for the 2020 Census were ramping up. Thompson plans to explain his recent departure and what to expect from the US Census Bureau going forward at a National Press Club Headliners Newsmaker on July 25 at 10 a.m.
Thompson had just testified before Congress, seeking the spike in funding that the census traditionally gets as it prepares for the every-ten-year effort to the count the American population. Thompson was leading efforts to modernize data collection, and allow people to respond for the first time on cell phones. The Census is mandated by the Constitution, to fulfill the promise of equal representation, draw congressional districts, and guide government spending according to population and need.
Before he became the Census Director in 2013, Thompson was President and CEO of NORC, the National Opinion Research Center, and between 1975 and 2002 was Associate Census Director.
The National Press Club is located on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building at 529 14th St., NW, Washington, D.C. This news conference is open to credentialed media and NPC members, free of charge but advance registration is required.
