AFT President Randi Weingarten to Deliver Major Address on the Crisis in the Teaching Profession, and Lay Out Agenda to Secure Investment and the Freedom to Teach

WASHINGTON—Amid increased teacher activism and with an eye on the 2020 presidential election, AFT President Randi Weingarten will deliver a major address on the crisis in the teaching profession—a crisis fueled by massive disinvestment in public education and deprofessionalization—and discuss a path forward to secure investment and the freedom to teach.

Weingarten will lay out pragmatic solutions that can be implemented at the school, district and state levels; negotiated at the bargaining table; or legislated. Following Weingarten’s speech, union, district and state leaders will discuss how they are addressing the crisis in American education and how others can build on their successes.

Interviews with Weingarten and classroom educators will be available. Media must RSVP here. The event will be livestreamed on AFT’s Facebook page.
