News Conference

Across red and blue states alike, voters and legislatures have approved laws banning cages for mother pigs—known as gestation crates—that are so small the animals cannot even turn around for years at a time. California’s Proposition 12 is one of these landmark laws. Passed with 63% of the vote, it was championed by family farmers and humane organizations working together to ensure animals are treated with basic decency.

Now, those hard-won protections are under threat from legislators seeking to overturn them. In a historic show of unity, more than 200 farmers and meat companies are traveling to Washington, D.C. to defend these humane farming standards and protect the livelihoods built around them.

At this press conference, farmers will share how Prop 12 and similar laws have strengthened their businesses, improved animal welfare, and bolstered consumer trust. They will also explain how repealing these laws would devastate family farms and rural communities. Meat company leaders will discuss how higher welfare standards create transparency and confidence among consumers who increasingly demand responsibly raised food.

Confirmed speakers include representatives from ButcherBox, Hershey Ag, and True Story Foods, as well as renowned farmers Will Harris and Joel Salatin.
