Eyes in the Skies: Drone Newsgathering & The Law
July 23, 2014 6:30 PM
Location: Conference Rooms
Every newsroom wants to fly drones, but the FAA and Congress are reluctant to let journalists loose with flying cameras. If my neighbor can strap his iPhone camera to the toy helicopter she bought at the Sharper Image, why can't I take video for breaking news stories? What exactly are the legal obstacles?
Attorney and NPC Member Chuck Tobin with Holland & Knight, who is leading an effort to enact regulations for this type of aerial journalism, will explain the legal turbulence. University of Nebraska journalism Professor Matt Waite will demonstrate how drones operate and discuss their potential for new news perspectives.
