Global Experts Unite to Combat Russian Disinformation in High-Stakes Washington Event
Washington D.C., October 29, 2024 – A coalition of leading experts will gather at the National Press Club to address the escalating global threat of Russian disinformation, an issue affecting democratic institutions, religious freedoms, and elections worldwide. The event, taking place from 8:00-11:00 a.m., invites media, policymakers, and concerned citizens to join a critical dialogue on strategies to counteract these destabilizing campaigns.
This timely event features three panels led by authorities in media, politics, security, and human rights. The discussions will shed light on Russia’s calculated use of disinformation to destabilize governments, influence voter behavior, and rationalize religious repression within occupied territories and beyond.
The first panel, "Disinformation as a Weapon: From Social Media to Mainstream Influence", will dive into the mechanics of disinformation dissemination via state-controlled media and social platforms. Experts will examine the role of algorithms, state-backed news sources, and the responsibilities of fact-checking bodies in curbing false narratives.
The second panel, "Russian Disinformation and the Erosion of Religious Freedoms in Occupied Territories and Beyond", will discuss how disinformation campaigns support religious persecution in areas like Crimea and Donbas, as well as globally. Panelists will explore the broader human rights implications and assess the impact on international perceptions of religious communities.
The final panel, "Elections Under Siege: How Russian Disinformation Undermines Democratic Processes", will explore Russian interference in elections across Eastern Europe, the EU, and the U.S. Attendees will gain insights into the strategies used to polarize societies and destabilize democratic institutions.
