The Elders – a group of former world leaders founded by Nelson Mandela working for peace, justice and human rights – will host an interactive online dialogue on the actions countries need to take to secure a just and successful outcome to the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow next month.
Two members of The Elders will discuss the need for greater political commitment to tackle the climate crisis, increased financial support to climate-vulnerable countries and the prioritisation of radical cuts in emissions this decade so the world can keep efforts to limit temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius alive.
- Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders and former President of Ireland
- Ban Ki-moon, Deputy Chair of The Elders and former UN Secretary-General

Ahead of the most crucial climate summit since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, The Elders are calling on political leaders to take urgent, bold steps to support an ambitious and balanced outcome in Glasgow.
The G20 summit in Rome at the end of October is a key moment. The leaders of the world’s 20 most powerful economies - representing almost 80% of global emissions - will have a critical opportunity to bring forward stronger national plans ahead of Glasgow.
In particular, the Elders are appealing to the leaders of the US and China, who together account for over a third of global emissions, to rise to the occasion, lead by example and work together in the face of this common threat.
