Americans continue to face an affordability crisis. The cost of household items like groceries has increased 30% over the last several years. Orange juice is 28% more expensive, and coffee prices are up nearly 20%. Beef prices in particular are outpacing inflation significantly, rising over 15% since last year.

These food price increases are not inevitable, but they are the predictable result of monopolized agricultural markets. A few large players and middlemen dominate these markets and are driving independent farmers and ranchers out of business, cutting jobs and worker pay, and leveraging their market power to gouge consumers and small businesses.

Big Ag market abuses and the lack of government response has pushed hundreds of farms into bankruptcy and thousands more into closing. Increasingly, foreign meat producers control America’s agriculture industry. For example, Brazil and China collectively produce 32% of the world’s beef.  President Trump’s side deals that boost foreign beef imports are only exacerbating this national crisis.

Please join the American Economic Liberties Project on March 5th from 9:00-10:00 am ET at the National Press Club for a briefing and announcement, featuring Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, farmers, former enforcers, and advocates on ending abusive practices by Big Ag monopolies to drive down food prices and revive America’s farms and ranches.  Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
