The BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K benefits the ongoing work of the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library. The EFNJL is committed to helping working journalists improve their skills through ongoing training and programming of future journalists through scholarships that promote diversity within our profession.

Since 2000, and with the help of the runners and sponsors, over $700,000 has been awarded to deserving students to attend college and pursue a career in journalism.

Information Regarding The Race

WEATHER

  • The BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K will occur rain or shine.
  • The race could however be delayed or cancelled in the event lightning strikes the area within 20 minutes of the race start time.
  • If lightning occurs, cancellation will be at the discretion of race officials and National Press Club staff.
  • If the event is cancelled, we will not be issuing refunds for the BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K, but plan on holding the pancake breakfast inside the Club.

REGISTRATION

  • You still have time to register for the BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K by coming to the National Press Club June 10 from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
  • Registration is limited to the first 1,000 runners and there are only a few left!
  • If registration reaches 1,000 runners before 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 10, we will not accept race-day registration.

Race Begins

Immediately following the race, all runners are invited to the National Press Club Ballroom for the NPC Health & Fitness Fair, post-race pancake breakfast and awards ceremony.

Entry Fees

NPC members and students: $25 until 5/30
General: $30 until 5/30
$35 for all runners after 5/30
$40 for all runners on race day
All entry fees include official 5K shirt and entrance to the post-race pancake breakfast.

Cash prizes for top finishers and medals for top age group finishers.

Race Prizes – Sponsored by Chevrolet

$200 each for first place, male and female – plus a one week loan of a Chevrolet VOLT
$100 each for 2nd place, male and female
$50 each for 3rd place, male and female
$100 each for 1st place male and female masters (over 40)
$50 each for top male and female NPC member

Medals for top age group finishers and everyone can win one of the many random door prizes!

Team categories include:

  • Largest or Fastest media team
  • Largest Fastest team
  • Each team member must submit an individual form and indicate team name on form.
  • Minimum 3 runners per team and top 3 finishers count toward team time.

Honorary Race Marshal Tony HortonThe 5K Committee thanks exercise trainer Tony Horton, creator of the P90X extreme fitness program, for being this year's honorary Race Marshal. Horton and his P90X team held an open workout for attendants on race day. Horton has trained professional athletes, U.S. military personnel, members of Congress and celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen, Usher, Tom Petty, Billy Idol, and Annie Lennox. Honorary Race Marshal Suzanne MalveauxSuzanne Malveaux anchors the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. edition of CNN Newsroom. Malveaux, who has worked in CNN’s White House unit for nearly a decade, has played a key role as a member of the network’s Best Political Team on Television and as the primary substitute anchor for The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. During her tenure with CNN, Malveaux has covered three presidents, presidential campaigns, and key stories including the War in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina and the economic crisis. Based in Atlanta, Malveaux joined the network in May 2002.
