Education Secretary John B. King appeared at an Oct. 19, 2016 National Press Club luncheon to discuss civic engagement as a cornerstone of democracy and the role of schools in preparing students to be active citizens.

Before becoming secretary, Dr. King served as the Department's principal senior advisor, overseeing all preschool-through-12th-grade education policies, programs, and strategic initiatives. Earlier in his career, he was the commissioner of education for the state of New York.
