Are newspapers in America dying? Paul Steinle and Sara Brown are on a mission to find out. Since June, the long-time media professionals have engaged in shoe-leather reporting by visiting newspapers across the country to take the pulse of a cross-section of dailies, weeklies and ethnic and alternative publications.

So far, they’ve visited 44 (50 is their goal) newspapers in 44 states. In the process, they have created a national, multi-media snapshot of the status of the industry on their website, www.whoneedsnewspapers.org.

Journalist and educator Paul Steinle is a former president of United Press International. Sara Brown has served as human resources manager and consultant for newspapers.

The event is co-sponsored by the Club’s Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library and The George Washington University Global Media Institute.
