Thompson offers a revealing look at the historic Davy Crockett combined with the astonishing tale of his transformation into one of America's first mega-celebrities – a tale that begins more than a century before Walt Disney's “King of the Wild Frontier” took the nation by storm.

In the road-trip tradition of Tony Horwitz and Sarah Vowell, Thompson traces Crockett's footsteps from the east Tennessee river valley where he was actually born; to Washington, where he served three terms in Congress; through the northeastern states, where he pioneered the political book tour; and on to Texas and the Alamo. Along the way, he seeks out those who know, love, and are still willing to fight over Davy's life and legacy.
