Scowcroft to assess global security threats at NPC Luncheon June 14

Brent Scowcroft, former National Security Adviser to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, will address a National Press Club luncheon on Tuesday, June 14.

Scowcroft, who is president of The Scrowcroft Group, and international consulting firm specializing in threat analysis, will discuss global security issues during the 24th annual Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation Journalism Awards presentation made in conjunction with the National Press Club.

Scowcroft also served as military assistant President Richard Nixon and as Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs in the Nixon and Ford administrations. He was a Lieutenant General in the U.S. Air Force and served as chairman of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. He also advised President Barack Obama in choosing his national security team. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Although he supported the invasion of Afghanistan, Scowcroft was a strong critic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Steven M. Ford, chairman of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and son of the 38th president, will present winners of the foundation's annual awards with checks for $5,000 each. Steven Thomma, White House reporter for McClatchy Newspapers, will be honored for distinguished reporting on the presidency and Shane Harris of Washingtonian magazine will be honored for distinguished reporting on national defense.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Foundation awards presentation will begin at 1 p.m. followed by Gen. Scrowcroft's talk, which will end at 2 p.m. The cost of tickets is $18 for Club members, $29 for their guests and $36 for the general public. Reserve at (202) 662-7501 or [email protected]
