FDA Commissioner plans to discuss agenda at Headliners Luncheon, Sept. 29

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, plans to appear at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Sept. 29 to discuss the agency's agenda and related issues.

The Headliners Luncheon will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the Club’s Ballroom. Tickets are $25 for Club members, who may purchase two at this price, and $35 for the general public. Purchase tickets by clicking here.

Gottlieb was sworn in as the 23rd FDA commissioner on May 10. He has focused on increasing efficiency and consistency in the review process, responding to the opioid crisis, promoting competition as a mechanism to make pharmaceuticals more accessible and addressing the agency's chronic staff shortage.

At the time of his nomination, Gottlieb was a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a clinical assistant professor at the New York University School of Medicine in Manhattan, where he also practiced medicine as a hospital physician.

Previously, Gottlieb served as the FDA’s deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs and as a senior advisor to the FDA commissioner. He also worked on implementing the Medicare drug benefit as a senior adviser to the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where he supported policy work on quality improvement and the agency’s coverage process, particularly as it related to new medical technologies.

In 2013, Gottlieb was appointed by the Senate to serve on the Federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee, which advises the Department of Health and Human Services on health care information technology.

Gottlieb completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and is a graduate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and of Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Connecticut, where he studied economics.

The Headliners Luncheon will include remarks by Gottlieb followed by a question-and-answer session from the audience. To submit a question in advance, put FDA in the subject line and email to [email protected] before 10 a.m. on the day of the luncheon.

Club Members who wish to attend the pre-luncheon reception must RSVP separately to [email protected] 48 hours before the event. Space may be limited. You must have a paid reservation to the Luncheon to attend the VIP reception.
