Celebrate your best work by entering the National Press Club journalism contest

The National Press Club wants to see examples of the best journalism from 2011 in its annual journalism contest, which includes a new competition for best breaking news coverage.

The breaking news competition will be ncluded with the many categories traditionally offered in the contest. The contest deadline is April 1.

“Journalists all over the world have received recognition by the National Press Club as a distinct honor,” said National Press Club President Theresa Werner. “When you stand among our winners you are in the tradition of David Broder, in the shadow of Dan Balz and standing beside Lara Logan .... the best of the best.”

Details on how to enter the contest can be found here.

The National Press Club awards are intended to recognize the best in both traditional and newer forms of journalism. The competition offers journalists a chance to have their work recognized by the National Press Club, one of the most high-profile journalism organizations in the country.

"This ‘Breaking News’ category bolsters an already strong NPC Awards line-up” said Mark Hamrick, past Press Club president who pushed for the expansion. “An increasingly large number of people are constantly connected to news sources through mobile devices, so journalists must be more careful than ever to balance the need for quick reaction against necessary accuracy,“ he said.

The contest includes awards for political reporting, regional reporting on Washington, international coverage, consumer reporting, online journalism and newsletter journalism. It also includes a group of awards for areas as diverse as reporting on the welfare of animals, coverage of the journalism industry, the aviation industry, problems facing the elderly and humor writing.
