Raimonds Vējonis, who became Latvia president in July, will discuss the geopolitical situation in the Eastern Europe, plans for increased defense spending in his country and migrant crisis in Europe -- at a National Press Club luncheon on Oct. 1.

Vējonis, a member of the Green Party, part of the Union of Greens and Farmers, previously served as a minister of defense and minister of environment. Latvia joined NATO and the European Union in 2004. Besides Latvia’s attention to the EU Eastern Partnership policy, one of the Baltic nation's main targets is also to strengthen the transatlantic partnership and to move forward with the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement.

Lunch will be served at 12:00 p.m., with remarks beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 1:30 p.m. Tickets cost $23 for Press Club members (NPC Members may purchase two tickets at this rate) and $37 for all other non-member tickets.

For questions, please email [email protected] or call (202) 662–7500. Tickets must be paid for at the time of purchase.

To submit a question in advance, put LATVIA in the subject line and email to [email protected] before 10 a.m. on the day of the luncheon.
