MSNBC anchor and Emmy-winning TV writer Lawrence O’Donnell will appear at a National Press Club Headliners Book Rap at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, to discuss his new book, Playing with Fire: The 1968 Election and the Transformation of American Politics.

In Playing with Fire, O’Donnell, host of MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” tells the story of the chaotic 1968 election that eventually saw the ascension of Richard Nixon to the White House in the midst of the Vietnam War. Complete with a full cast of characters – Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Eugene McCarthy - Penguin Press says that with new insights O’Donnell, “recounts an election where nothing went according to script” and “an ominous tone was set for Watergate and all else that was to follow.”

O’Donnell joined MSNBC as a political analyst in 1996. He was the executive producer and writer for the former NBC television series “The West Wing.” His career in politics spanned many years as a Capitol Hill aide where served as a senior advisor to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-New York and the chief of staff on two Senate committees.

This event will feature a discussion with the author, an audience question-and-answer session, and a book signing. Tickets are $5 for National Press Club members and $10 for the general public. Copies of the book are available online and at the event. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the non-profit affiliate of the Club, the National Press Club Journalism Institute, so we kindly ask that you leave all outside books and memorabilia at home.
