First ladies have become as influential in American politics as elected officials. More than any other time in history, the first lady now bears responsibilities tantamount to a high-ranking cabinet member. On Behalf of the President: Presidential Spouses and White House Communications Strategy Today (Praeger; April 30, 2016) documents the growing presence of the presidents' wives in the communications strategies of the last three administrations (Clinton, Bush, and Obama) and explores how the first lady serves to persuade public opinion, make personal appeals to the public on behalf of the president, and promote initiatives that support administration policies.

Author Lauren Wright will discuss her findings at the National Press Club in the Conference Rooms on Thursday, May 12 at 6:30PM. The event includes an author discussion, Q&A from the audience, and book signing. Books are available for pre-order online or at the event. Members who pre-order books online will have their ticket fees waived. Tickets are $5 for NPC members; $10 public. All sales are final. This event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit NPC Journalism Institute.
