NPC Book Event

Welcome the start of the 2021 baseball season by tuning in to a virtual Headliners book event with author Fred Frommer and former Washington Senators announcer Phil Hochberg on April 1 at 2 p.m.

Frommer, former AP reporter and author of “You Gotta Have Heart: Washington Baseball from Walter Johnson to the 2019 World Series Champion Nationals," and Hochberg, now a Washington lawyer who represents sports leagues, will discuss the relationship U.S. presidents have with baseball. Past NPC President Michael Freedman will moderate the event.

President William Howard Taft was the first president to throw out a first pitch when he tossed the ball from the stands to Walter Johnson on April 14, 1910 before the Washington Senators played the Philadelphia Athletics. Since then, most U.S. presidents have thrown an opening pitch. -- though not always in Washington D.C. and not always on opening day.

This one-hour program will stream live on the Club’s website and YouTube Channel as part of the National Press Club’s Virtual headliner series, and is accessible to both the press and general public free-of-charge.

Viewers are invited to submit their questions for Frommer and Hochberg in advance or during the live program via email to [email protected].
