News deserts — both in regional areas that lost their newspapers and in communities that are underserved by media — are vastly growing and have a multifold impact. People in news deserts do not have access to the information they need to make informed decisions. The National Press Club is hosting a news briefing with advocates for Alsu Kurmasheva on Monday, Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. In May 2023, Alsu, who is a citizen of the United States and Russia, traveled to Kazan, Russia to assist her ailing mother. This was not a work trip but a health emergency. Upon attempting to depart Russia in June she was denied exit and ordered to remain in Kazan.
