Survey on Teen Drug Use
Officials released a report titled "2005 Monitoring the Future Survey on Teen Drug Abuse." The report examined recent trends in juvenile drug use and found a modest decline in teen drug abuse of alcohol and tobacco, but found increases in use of prescription pills such as OxyContin. Marijuana use remained significant, but had declined slightly. Following their remarks they answered questions from reporters.

Former presidential candidates George McGovern and Bob Dole and former seminary president Donald Messer spoke at the release of their book Ending Hunger Now: A Challenge to Persons of Faith, published by Fortress Press. The authors said that hunger is not just a problem for politicians but that all have an ethical and moral obligation to help people who are suffering. They also discussed how religious groups should draw on their own convictions and become more involved to help end world hunger. Constitutionality of Health Care Reform Bill
South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster talked about the review of state attorneys general into the constitutionality of health care legislation being considered by Congress. Mr. McMaster and 13 state attorneys general recently expressed constitutional concerns over an agreement reached by Senate negotiators to include a provision in the Senate bill, known as the "Cornhusker Kickback," that would have the federal government cover the costs of Medicaid expansion in Nebraska. The attorney generals have requested its removal in order to prevent litigation by the states.
