1996 Voter's Guide

Conflict in Former Yugoslavia
Cabinet Minister-at-Large Milentijevic spoke on the current political and social situation in the republics of the former Yugoslavia where nationalism has erupted into military conflict. Issues brought up in her remarks included the political position of the Yugoslavian government and the living conditions for Muslims and Croats in Serbian detention camps in Bosnia. She urged international diplomats to emphasize peace rather than military intervention, and urged that diplomatic efforts concentrate on forcing the two sides in the conflict to negotiate a settlement.

Canceled News Conference on Aid to Israel
Reporters milled about as they awaited the ambassador to Israel, who was to give a news conference on U.S. aid to Israel. The ambassador's previous commitment ran long, however, and the conference was delayed until a future undetermined time. Eventually, a spokesperson came out to announce the news conference had been canceled, because the ambassador had already answered questions from reporters following his meeting with Secretary of State Baker. Reporters complained about the cancellation following the announcement.

Strategy for Health Care Reform
The American Hospital Association held a news conference in the National Press Club to discuss alternative proposals for reducing the high cost of health care on patients and businesses. The strategy determined by the American Hospital Association, the goal of which was to provide access to health care to all Americans, included input from all members of society including businesses and individuals. The flexible plan mandates universal health care coverage for all Americans, plans for holding down health care costs, and broad distribution of guidelines to ensure the quality of health care.
