Home Equity Fraud
Public Citizen officials released a survey alleging that members of low-income, elderly, and minority groups had been victims of home equity loan scams, whereby lenders convinced homeowners into signing second mortgages with high interest rates and fees. They also took questions from the press. In August, Congress passed the Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act, designed to combat home equity fraud and abuse, though at this time it was still waiting for President Clinton to sign it into law.

Status of F-22 Fighter Program
This was a news conference to discuss the future of the F-22 fighter program. The briefing was given by the plane's builder, Lockheed corporation. The F-22 will be the air force's replacement for the F-15 fighter. Full production would begin in 1998 continuing through the year 2009. The total program cost is estimated at 71 billion dollars for 442 aircraft, or about 162 million dollars per plane.

Clinton Sexual Harrassment Charges
Mr. Bennett briefed reporters concerning a lawsuit filed by Paula Jones, a former Arkansas employee, charging the former governor with sexual harrassment and asking for $700,000 in damages. Following an opening statement, Mr. Bennett, the brother of conservative author William Bennett, took questions concerning the lawsuit and his impending attempts to have it dismissed.

U.S.-Korea Relations
The foreign minister answered reporters' questions about his trip to the United States and the situation on the Korean peninsula. Yesterday the United Nations Security Council voted on a resolution urging North Korea to open all its nuclear sites to international inspectors. Earlier today, the foreign minister discussed the situation with U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry.
