National Performance Review
Officials from three labor unions representing federal workers spoke in a news conference to respond to the National Performance Review government reform program introduced earlier in the day by Vice President Gore and President Clinton. The officials praised efforts to make government more efficient and less costly, and said government employees themselves desired initiatives to overhaul the inefficient systems of government.

Events in Nigeria
President-elect Abiola talked with reporters about the political situation in his native Nigeria, where he was prevented from serving as president when a military coup occurred following the election. He said the population of Nigeria is undertaking a general strike in protest of the defeat of democracy represented by the military coup. Rep. Jefferson introduced the African leader, saying Chief Abiola held the full support of the Congressional Black Caucus. Chief Abiola responded to reporters' questions.

I Have a Dream Speech Anniversary
