'Founding mothers' of NPR spotlighted at virtual Headliners book event, today

Author Lisa Napoli will speak with three of the pioneering women at NPR at a National Press Club Headliners Virtual Book Rap at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 29.

The three are Susan Stamberg, Nina Totenberg and Linda Wertheimer. They are featured in Napoli's new book, "Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR."

The fourth, Cokie Roberts, passed away in 2019.

The one-hour program will stream live on the Club’s website and YouTube Channel, and is accessible to both the media and members of the general public free of charge.

Viewers are invited to submit their questions for Napoli, Stamberg, Totenberg and Wertheimer in advance or during the live program via email to [email protected]. Please put NPR in the subject line.

Napoli’s group biography tells the story of how four strong women fought sexism, covered decades of news and came to be icons whose voices defined NPR. Three of the four women will join with Napoli in sharing their stories of how they blazed the trail and formed deep and enduring friendships along the way. Their colleague Cokie Roberts died in 2019.

Napoli, a journalist who worked at The New York Times, Marketplace, MSNBC and KCRW, is the author of three other books, "Radio Shangri-La," "Ray & Joan" and "Up All Night: Ted Turner, CNN and the Birth of 24-Hour News."
