Peace Corps Operations

Mr. Vasquez spoke on the anniversary of President Kennedy's speech announcing the formation of the Peace Corps. Mr. Vasquez became director of the organization in 2002. The Peace Corps currently oversees more than 7,500 volunteers who serve in 71 different countries. Mr. Vasquez talked about how the Peace Corps has evolved since its inception, and noted that its mission "to promote global peace and friendship" is vital in today's world. He spoke about the efforts of Peace Corps volunteers in Muslim countries, noting that of the 71 nations currently served by the Peace Corps, 18 are predominantly Muslim. Mr. Vasquez enlivened his remarks with anecdotes of the experiences of current and former volunteers as well as those aided by the Peace Corps. Following his speech, he responded to questions from the audience.
