Freedom of Information

Ms. Hefner's address was sponsored by the National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists. It was part of activities commemorating passage of the Freedom of Information Act in 1966. Her speech followed a moment of silence observed for Associated Press reporter Terry Anderson, who was entering his sixth year as a hostage in the Middle East, and the presentation of freedom of the press awards. Hefner talked about diversity of ethnicity and lifestyles in the 90s, contrasting with increased censorship. She refers to the commercial pressures that bring about self-censorship.
