Tom Rosenstiel, journalism thinker, author to discuss his new political thriller at book event, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

Tom Rosenstiel, one of the nation’s most recognized media thinkers and co-author of the "The Elements of Journalism," the revered text assigned to nearly every journalism school student in modern history, will share his first work of fiction, "Shining City," at a National Press Club book event on Thursday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the Club's Conference Rooms.

The event will feature an author discussion, an audience question-and-answer session and a book signing. Tickets are $5 for Club members and $10 for the public. Tickets and books can be purchased online here or at the event.

Rosenstiel has been a longtime observer of Washington’s political scene, and his intimate knowledge of the system’s inner workings pay off in this fast-paced political thriller. Readers follow the story of two "fixers" with a proven track record -- Peter Rena and his lively partner -– as they are tasked with their biggest job yet: to vet the president’s Supreme Court nominee.

The president’s pick is a polarizing figure, and as power players on both sides of the aisle mobilize for and against, a series of seemingly unrelated killings complicates Rena’s task.

Rosenstiel -- author, journalist, researcher and media critic -- has been executive director of American Press Institute since January 2013. Before that he was founder and for 16 years director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism at the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C. He also was co-founder and vice chair of the Committee of Concerned Journalists.

No outside books or memorabilia are permitted at the book event. Proceeds from the event benefit the non-profit affiliate of the Club, the National Press Club Journalism Institute, which offers innovative, practical training to journalists and communications professionals working in a rapidly-changing media environment.
