Special screening of documentary "Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America" on June 26

Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill., a strong advocate for pro-immigration reform who has succeeded in gaining significant bipartisan alliances on the issue, will give the keynote remarks at the showing of a special screening of "Harvest of Empires: The Untold Story of Latinos in America" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, in the Conference Rooms.

The screening has been arranged by the International Correspondents Committee and coincides with key votes expected this week in the Senate on an immigration reform package.

Producer Wendy Thompson, who heads EVS Communications, and co-director/producer Eduardo Lopez, the award-winning producer of Linea Directa, the Spanish-language television series in the Washington, D.C. region, will take part in a question-and-answer session. A cash bar reception will follow the program..

The documentary is generating favorable reviews during initial showings across the nation. It lays out a historic picture of U.S. policy in Latin America, described by the producers as a ”look at the role that U.S. economic and military interests played in triggering an unprecedented wave of migration that is transforming our nation’s cultural and economic landscape."

The film is based on the book “Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America” by Juan Gonzalez, an award-winning columnist for the New York Daily News since 1987, an investigative reporter and a co-host of the radio and television program “Democracy Now!”
